Live From 6A: Conan O'Brien
|
So our late night hosts are going head to head with compilation CDs of live musical performances from their shows, eh? Who's Letterman got? Well, if Michael Bolton had hair his name would be Rod Stewart and he'd be setting the tone for the Letterman collection. Thankfully we've got Conan O'Brien and Conan O'Brien goes to work with Bowie and Bjork instead of Rod the nod.
Bowie is in good company here, this CD will earn its place in your collection Bowie notwithstanding. But buy it for Bowie; the live acoustic version of Dead Man Walking is the best of all versions available. If you're not fond of that bouncy number from Earthling I can sympathize, it wasn't one of my favorites at first but hey, this version is better than flapjacks in the morning!
Other bright spots include Bjork's Human Behavior and Matthew Sweet's cover of the old Move and ELO tune Do Ya. The second half of the collection loses steam with some of the post-grunge-or-whatever-it's-supposed- to-be, but there was a lot of amelodious stuff out in the late sixties too and we made it through that, we can make it through this. Now we have programmable CD players.

The Bridge School Concerts
|
Neil Young's concerts in support of The Bridge School inspire a baker's dozen of performers and then some to issue some of their best live performances. Bowie turns out a friendly live acoustic performance of "Heroes", Elvis Costello, Neil Young and Simon and Garfunkel pull ancient classics from their catalogs, while Don Henley and Ministry pull ancient classics from the catalogs of the Beatles and the Grateful Dead. The Lovemongers is another name for Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, who pull an ancient classic from the catalog of Led Zeppelin. The most memorable moment comes from the Pretenders, Sense of Purpose.
Ever notice how annoying folk singers are always singing about their soul when they should be singing about getting a job?

99X Live
|
Acoustic version of Dead Man Walking recorded live at an early morning session for Atlanta's 99X FM. I haven't taken the time to sit down to compare this version and the acoustic version from the Conan O'Brien CD side by side, but to my untrained, irreligious ear, the one version sounds close enough to the other.
I'm sure that some of the less sacreligious Bowie fans will email me to whisper about some muttering at 2:58 into one version or another, or perhaps there's a slight lyric change that I missed, or a sparkling instrumental performance that didn't catch my dullard ears. But to these ears, sounds close enough. I'll probably catch the nuances when I pop this one onto a home made compilation tape. (Note: I did. Conan O'Brien version is a titch better.)
One additional lure for Bowie fans - David did the artwork for the CD cover, sleeve and disk. Since the CD was issued in support of a charitable cause called The Ark, various hand-drawn animals adorn the packaging. Bowie fans may want to contact Blockbuster Music in Atlanta, or perhaps 99X, to obtain a copy. That's the only way you're going to find this CD. Me, I must thank Bonster who had spares handy. So, thanks Bonster!

A few more drinks might convince me to become more effusive about this offering, but for the last month I've found a serious lack of inspiration when it comes to writing up a response for you about this CD.
Granted, the Bowie track really is the best thing on this disk, but I doubt that I'll spend a lot of time with it until I get a chance to dub it onto a custom-made mixed tunes tape. There are some good recordings to be had here, including some wow's from Sinead O'Connor, who displays a sense of true artistry on Someone to Watch Over Me, and Luscious Jackson whose Jill Cunniff tempts with a relaxed swing on I've Got A Crush On You.
Aside from the wow's, there are a few woes to be had, run of the the mill hip hop renderings on the first half of this disk. If one rebels against the gospel of hip, it seems that hip-hop has apparently run into redundancy. And except for the previously mentioned beauties by Sinead O'Connor and Luscious Jackson, the ballads on this CD at times seem like a cruel joke. I envision some heartless producer calling a variety of hopeful sirens, saying, "Can you sing a Gershwin tune for this compilation?", without telling each singer that every other songbird has also chirped out a similar whispery, breathy delivery. Such vocalists are playing out roles rather than emoting. I'd hoped to find 90's incarnations of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, but I guess we'll have to settle for Deanna Durbin and Vera Lynn, or maybe Eileen Barton.
The Bowie track really is marvelous and evocative, quite possibly the most moving Bowie song on a compilation since the title track to the film Cat People. If you're inclined to shell out fifteen bucks for one Bowie song, go for it. Otherwise, save your money and pick up any Bowie CD not yet in your collection.

Saturday Night Live Volume 1

I've seen this in cutouts for a deep discount lately. I guess these didn't sell very well. The list of artists and songs is good enough but for some reason I just don't find myself playing this one. Bowie's live Scary Monsters is the memorable 1997 performance with Reeves Gabrels on guitar. People have asked about this performance on CD, well here it is.
You'll need to use the "Skip" button on your CD remote to bypass messy-haired alt-boys who sing like goats with tremelo. Poor things, trying to sound like Eddie Vedder when we already have Creed to do that for us.

Bowie opens the show with Paul Simon's America, accompanied by Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and Mark Plati on guitar. Kind of a surprise since in the past Bowie has occasionally tapped Europe's anti-American chic. Mind you, those are some of my favorite Bowie songs, I'm Afraid Of Americans and This Is Not America, but given the rampant emotionalism in the wake of 9/11 Bowie wisely consoled the audience for their losses. These are now David Bowie's neighbors.
I played this two CD set once or twice and just couldn't bring myself to put it on again. One of these days I should really scavenge the memorable tracks from this and burn a compilation CD. Wouldn't be that much to scavenge. McCartney's attempt at a grand statement with Freedom isn't nearly as moving as when I saw him do the simple heartwarming (ack, did I use that word?) All My Lovin' earlier this year.
For the last twenty years Elton John has sounded like a boring old frog so although Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters is a good song you'd do better to just find a used copy of its original CD Honky Chateau. And what is this Five For Fighting crap? Is this what they call "emo"? Oh no! I'll bet this guy cries about not being able to find a parking space.
I don't know, I must be in a cranky mood tonight. But even if I was in a good mood I still wouldn't pay more than five bucks for this 2 CD set. Don't go buying it just to make a donation; Osama bin Laden is going to nuke New York anyway. The financial heart of the western world, the largest port on the eastern seaboard, the home of the UN and ten million people, what else is he gonna use his nukes on, Terre Haute? All the homeland security in the world doesn't mean a thing when the nukes drop in from the sky. But with Osama's track record of double strikes, one nuke over land with one nuke over water will leave us a beautiful rainbow epitaph. My brain hurts like a warehouse. Thanks for the memories.
