Will ya look at that, something from every stage of David Bowie's career, from his first mod recordings to Earthling remixes. Finally, the full length version of "Heroes" on a collection, with all those great lyrics you never hear on the short version. And there's that Christmas thing you couldn't find. This will make a perfect companion piece to the new CD hours.....
There's only one catch. This box set doesn't really exist. I added this box set to the website as a shrine to the best tracks from each album. You've noticed that the rest of this website can get passionate about Bowie's best albums and wounded about the rare betrayal. So here's where I try to be objective. If I were an A&R exec from Bowie's label, this is the box set I'd put together. Virtually every Bowie single and classic album track, sequenced for best flow.
Unlike most box sets, included are live versions, rare versions, alternate versions or remixes only if they really are the best version of the song. (EMI has the rarities box in the wings anyway.) Granted, a lot of "single edit" versions are used for time considerations, but I can't imagine a more hard core knockout box set, song after song after song. It doesn't get much tighter than this.
Seeing as it doesn't include Lady Grinning Soul among others, it's not the six CD best of that I'd make for myself. (If you're curious what that would look like, here it is.) And I'm sure that it doesn't match your taste perfectly either; in the real world compilations never do. I'm aware that a box set wouldn't be allowed to include five of the six songs from Station To Station in their entirety. But every one is a classic. (I'd leave out Wild Is The Wind but since it was a belated European chart hit, replete with video, ummm, that's where I bow to the charts.)
Oh yeah, I snaked the title as a theatrical reference to the name of the Pulitzer prize-winning play. The second disk especially has a lot of songs that deal with that play's subject matter. Too bad I couldn't find a current photo of David boxing. Oh well.
